I'm a bit unclear on what exact effect you want to achieve...
If you're getting sharp edges using a cross shaped object try using a
Shadow Mapped light with a high Shadow Fuzziness value. You might need to kick
up the Shadow Map Size if your edges get chunky.

Use a clip map. Draw a cross with soft edges. Any light passing
through the clip map should have softer edges.
